It is Christmas, and there are holiday ice carvings in downtown Battle Creek. When I went walking around downtown on Christmas Eve, I took these photos of the sculptures. It is a holiday tradition in downtown Battle Creek, and is a part of the seasonal Festival of Lights.
Every city has some holiday festivities usually, and ours here in Battle Creek usually kicks off with a holiday parade in early December. Then after that there are walking tours to see the lights in the evenings, and also the annual ice carving event.
Holiday ice carvings in downtown Battle Creek usually endure for several months, as the temperatures often remain below freezing from December through March, and into April. I took these photos on Christmas Eve, but the carvings were done almost two weeks prior, and they look just as perfect as when they were made.
This year there was a harp and swan sculpture, and also a reindeer. There was a little toy train, and a headless toy soldier and the words ‘Seasons Greetings’ carved into the ice. The toy soldier was designed so you could place your face where the head should be, and have your picture taken.
The holiday ice carvings in downtown Battle Creek are interconnected with the Christmas light displays, which offer additional sparkle and razzle-dazzle to the carvings. The holiday ice carvings in downtown Battle Creek are traditionally displayed in Mill Race Park across from the Kellogg Foundation Headquarters, and will remain in the park until they melt.
As a local Realtor, I consider the holiday ice carvings in downtown Battle Creek to be a wonderful feature of the community during this time of year. They are fun, and when they are being made, people gather around and watch the artists create them. I was not able to go the night they carved them this year, but I can admire the beauty nonetheless.
