The 2010 Realtor ‘Shoot Out’ was held this past weekend at Centerline Family Sports Shooting Facility.

This was the 5th Annual fundraising event held for the benefit of the charitable organizations that the Battle Creek Area Association of Realtors has chosen to support in 2010.
The Shoot Out offered an opportunity for new and experienced shooters to compete in three events: Trap, Skeet and Pistol. Teams were formed with four shooters each, and awards were given for group that performed the best in Trap and Skeet, and an individual award of ‘Top Gun’ was given to the individual who had the highest score of the day.
This was my first time participating in this event, and I admit I had my reservations going into it. I had not held a gun, or fired one since I last went hunting as a teenager with my brothers in Arizona. I had heard about this event the past few years, and never participated thinking it was for the experienced. I was talked into it by a lender friend of mine in the Association, and went there with no confidence that I would be able to successfully hit any target, much less score any points.
However, I had great instruction in gun safety from the Centerline staff when I first arrived there, and great help from my fellow participants. I soon began to become comfortable with the gun that was loaned to me for the contest, and my first event was the ‘Trap’ event.
This is interesting, if you have never done it. It is essentially a clay pigeon or disk fired at your command of ‘Pull!’ The disk fires from a small box in front of the range directly away from you. It arches in the air, at different angles, and your task is to hit it. Not as easy as it sounds. All in all, we each fired 25 rounds, and at the end the scores were added up. My score out of 25 was a pathetic ‘3’. But hey! At least I hit the target a few
times and was not at zero!
The next event was the ‘Skeet’ event. This is a similar event, with a clay target being fired in the air, however it is shot from right to left and left to right from two separate boxes, one high and one low. A whole new challenge indeed! We as a team were moved around to fire at these targets in seven different locations, and some of these were ‘double shots’.
A double shot is when two rounds are put in your gun, and two clay targets are fired in opposite directions, in a crossing pattern. Your job is to hit both of them. Lots of fun and still this event included only 25 rounds fired by each participant. My score after this one was 10 hit out of 25, so my confidence was improving.
Then we moved to the pistol range, and were given just six rounds to shoot at six targets. After a little instruction, and some practice rounds, we did our shooting. My score after this one was 3 out of 6.
So if you are ever in Battle Creek, and want to have some fun with shooting, look into the Centerline Family Sports Shooting Facility in Calhoun County. They are located at 23100 13 Mile Rd in Bellevue. As a Realtor in Calhoun County, the Centerline facility is one of the great afternoon getaway facilities in the area.
